Nuclear Technology
Associate Degree in Applied Science
10-624-1
Degree Completion Time: 4 Terms

The increasing use of radiation and radioactive materials in today’s world has created a demand for Nuclear Technicians. This demand is expected to remain high for years to come. The Nuclear Technology program offers students a unique opportunity to obtain the Nuclear Technician photospecialized training in demand by businesses and organizations licensed to utilize radioactive materials. It is also an excellent springboard for a four-year degree in the high-demand fields of Health Physics, Radiation Safety and Nuclear Engineering.

About the Program

The Nuclear Technology program is a shared program between Lakeshore Technical College (LTC) in Cleveland, WI, and Northeast Wisconsin Technical College (NWTC) in Green Bay, WI. Classes are offered in a traditional classroom setting using Interactive Television (ITV) methods to link the two Technical Colleges. For flexibility, some classes may be taken in an online format through LTC using established distance learning methods. The Nuclear Technology program is closely linked with the Radiation Safety Technician Certificate program. Prospective students have three basic options for obtaining an Associate in Applied Science (AAS) degree:

  1. Traditional Classroom Option – Attend classes at either the LTC or NWTC campus. This option is recommended for students living in northeastern Wisconsin who have recently completed high school or individuals looking to change careers and are interested in gaining an entry-level position in the nuclear power industry. Completion of the general-education and technical courses specified in the Program Sheet leads to an AAS degree in Nuclear Technology. In some cases, online classes may substitute for traditional classes.
  2. Online Nuclear Technology Option with Radiation Safety Technician concentration – Take classes either online or on campus depending on your physical location. This option is recommended for students already working in the nuclear power industry but residing outside the State of Wisconsin who wish to make use of their occupational experience in obtaining an Associate Degree from an accredited institution of higher learning. AAS degrees in Nuclear Technology or Radiation Safety Technician are available through this option due to built-in flexibility in the choice of courses designed to lead you in the direction of your stated goal.
  3. Radiation Safety Technician Certification Option– Complete the Basic, Intermediate or Advanced Certificates. This option is recommended for students looking for a stepped-approach to completing only the technical courses in Radiation Safety. Completion of all three certificates along with recommended general-education courses can result in an AAS degree if desired - contact your Counselor. This option can also be useful to those who already have a bachelor’s degree and want or need only the technical courses in Radiation Safety.

Of course, individual online courses are always available for those who elect to brush up their technical knowledge in specific skill areas by taking just the one or two courses they need.

Graduates of LTC's Nuclear Technician program have a wide variety of career opportunities:

  • Nuclear power facilities

  • Medical facilities
  • U. S. Department of Energy Sites
