LTC adjusts summer hours to conserve energy

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
06/06/08

CLEVELAND, WI

Lakeshore Technical College is adjusting its hours of operation this summer as part of its energy conservation initiative.

LTC campuses in Cleveland, Manitowoc, and Sheboygan will be closed every Friday from June 13 through July 25, including the Fourth of July holiday. The college projects an energy cost savings of $3,500 from not running air conditioning, lights, computers and other equipment on these days.

Except for the holiday week, LTC staff will work their full work weeks in fewer days, Mondays through Thursdays, or use vacation time to cover the closed days.

To view the summer hours at each LTC location, visit LTC’s web site at www.gotoltc.edu and click on “About LTC,” then “Hours of Operation.”

LTC has other measures in place to conserve campus energy, such as utilizing energy-efficient lighting, vestibule ceiling insulation and wind and solar energy.

At LTC’s Cleveland campus, a wind turbine provides nearly three percent of the campus’ electrical energy needs, and two photovoltaic systems, or solar arrays, collect and convert sunlight into electricity to help power the campus.

We Energies and Focus on Energy provided grants to assist with the arrays project, and LTC is receiving credit on its electricity bill from We Energies for the energy the system produces.

LTC also has an Energy Management Committee that works to decrease campus energy consumption through education, conservation and energy management.

The committee is formalizing an LTC Energy Policy that details procedures for staff to reduce energy consumption on campus. Committee members include LTC staff and representatives from Focus on Energy, We Energies and Wisconsin Public Service.

LTC has been recognized for its past energy conservation efforts. The college received the 2006-07 Energy Performance Award from the Wisconsin Technical College System. WTCS tracks energy usage at each of the 16 Wisconsin technical colleges and recognizes those colleges that annually use less than 85,000 British Thermal Units per square foot.
