| FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE 07/10/08 CLEVELAND, WI– The Northeastern Wisconsin Area Health Education Center, Manitowoc, has awarded grants to Lakeshore Technical College to provide high school students from Manitowoc and Sheboygan counties with nursing assistant and medical terminology courses. The grants will cover classroom and clinical expenses for 10 students from each county to take LTC’s nursing assistant program courses and 30 students from each county to take LTC’s online medical terminology course during the 2008-09 school year. Students will receive three LTC credits for each course completed. “Taking medical terminology or nursing assistant courses is a great way for students to introduce themselves to the health care field,” LTC Health Programs Counselor Kristi Irving said. “Both course areas offer information and skills that benefit students going into any of the health care programs at LTC and also are a great way to see if a career in health care is the right fit.” The nursing assistant program provides classroom and clinical instruction. Upon completion, students are eligible to take the state certification exam and work as certified nursing assistants. The medical terminology course introduces students to anatomy, pathology, diagnostic, surgical and therapeutic terminology by body systems. The instructor uses computer-based animation, case studies, photographs and pronunciation features to enhance learning. Intense student support is provided to optimize success for first-time online learners; high school students historically have a high success rate with the course. Nursing assistant classes will be offered on Tuesday and Thursday evenings in Sheboygan, Sept. 4 through Nov. 4, and in Manitowoc, Jan. 29 through March 31. The medical terminology course will be offered online Aug. 20 through Dec. 19 and Jan. 12 through May 12. Applications are due July 31.
