Lakeshore Technical College Renewable Energy Instructor Jenny Heinzen recently received the first-ever Educator Award at the Fourth Annual Small Wind Conference in Stevens Point, Wis. The award was one of two Small Wind Awards given for “enthusiasm, dedication, advocacy and contributions to the small wind industry.” Heinzen not only teaches LTC’s renewable energy classes, but she also manages LTC’s wind turbine and photovoltaic systems, which offset a portion of the campus’ electrical energy needs through wind and solar energy. Heinzen demonstrates her commitment to renewable energy in other ways as well. She serves on the Rural Energy Management Council’s citizen advisory council for the Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection. She also serves on the RENEW Wisconsin Board of Directors. RENEW is a nonprofit organization that promotes clean energy tactics, including wind power. Heinzen also teaches workshops for the Midwest Renewable Energy Association. The MREA hosted the conference that was attended by more than 200 manufacturers and installers in the small wind industry. The event was coordinated by Focus on Energy. LTC is continuing its commitment to renewable energy by launching a new wind energy technology associate degree program this fall. The program will teach students to install, test, service and repair wind turbine components. Careers in wind energy technology include wind turbine technician/mechanic/tower climber, installation technician, operation and maintenance technician and wind farm maintenance manager. Skilled technicians are needed for operation and maintenance activities in local, national and international wind farm settings. Registration for LTC’s fall 2008 classes is now open.
