Lakeshore Technical College students discussed their LTC experiences with legislators at LTC’s third annual Legislative Breakfast held recently at LTC’s Cleveland campus. The student panel included business management student Areli Estrada of Manitowoc, criminal justice—law enforcement student Dustin Fickett of Sheboygan, human resource administration student Dawn Mischler of Sheboygan and industrial welding student Tom Vinje of Two Rivers. LTC paralegal and administrative assistant student Jeni Kaufmann of Kiel also participated in the event. Legislators who attended the event included State Sen. Joe Leibham, State Rep. Steve Kestell, State Rep. Dan LeMahieu, State Rep. Terry Van Akkeren and State Rep. Bob Ziegelbauer. Suzanne Brault Pagel of U.S. Sen. Russ Feingold’s office and Tyler Vorpagel of U.S. Rep. Tom Petri’s office also were in attendance. LTC Board Chair Cindy Huhn, LTC Board Secretary/Treasurer Jerry Voechting and LTC Board Members Nancy Crowley and John Lukas participated in the event. Wisconsin Technical College System President Dan Clancy, LTC President Mike Lanser and LTC faculty and staff members also took part. The student panelists talked about why they chose to attend LTC and how getting involved with student organizations on campus has added to their college experiences. They also discussed how juggling their personal lives and financing college can sometimes be difficult but receiving an education through LTC ultimately is helping them accomplish their goals and prepare for the future. The students especially noted how LTC instructors are dedicated to helping them succeed, offering their time and expertise whenever needed. The students also offered their perspective when answering questions from the legislators about topics like how the Internet plays into their education, such as a research tool or through online classes. After the panel discussion, the legislators or their staff members gave brief comments about the event as well as updates about their latest governmental efforts.
