Medical Coding Specialist
Technical Certificate
30-543-1

2007-2008 Program Sheet

About the Career
A medical coding specialist reviews medical documentation provided by physicians and other health care providers and translates this into numerical codes. The coding specialist assigns and sequences diagnostic procedural codes using universally recognized coding systems. Several uses of coded data are for payment of healthcare claims, statistics and medical research.

Career Outlook
Employment opportunities are expected to be strong because of rapid growth in the number of medical tests, treatments, and procedures that will be increasingly scrutinized by health insurance companies, regulators, courts, and consumers. In addition, changing government regulations and the growth of managed care have increased the amount of paperwork involved in filing insurance claims.
